This is just a reminder list of things that may need to be done, we will let you know what we will handle and what your responsibility is.

    • Bring in clothing, including underclothing, glasses , dentures.


    • A picture for us and/or the newspaper notice. The picture will be returned and may contain other people in the photo. *If the service is going to be a closed casket or memorial it is nice to bring in a larger picture to be set up for the service.


    • Specific name of any non-local newspapers you wish to have the obituary placed in. Be aware that some newspapers charge for an obituary notice, we will let you know in advance what the fee may be before we OK printing.


    • If the family is going to organize the service participants, contact them as soon as possible so time & day of service can be set. Also we need to know the correct spelling of the names and names of songs selected.


    • Pallbearers names, we will let you know when and where the pallbearers should meet, also they are responsible for their own transportation to and from the service.


    • We will also let the family know when and where they should meet, the family is responsible for their own transportation unless we have been asked to arrange transportation for them.


    • Order flowers, if the service is going to be a Memorial with no burial following, we suggest baskets or arrangements, not easels.


    • If the person is a veteran, a copy of the DD214, discharge papers. A Veteran is eligible for a flag & government marker. If they were receiving disability or pension at the time of death they may be eligible for a death benefit of $450. Dept. of Veterans Affairs - 1-800-827-1000.


    • Any Insurance policies we are going to file on your behalf.


    • Contact the cemetery where the burial will be held if we are not able to handle this for you, if you own property you may need the deed or proof of payment to take to the cemetery office.


    • If you are planning a reception contact the place you wish to use, find out if they do the food or if you need to have it catered. Let either us or the minister know where the reception will be held so it may be announced at the service.


    Places to notify after a death:

    1. We will notify the Social Security Office but, a family member should call them within a week or two to verify any changes to benefits, 1-800-772-1213. **Note** There is a death benefit of $255, but it is only paid if there is a surviving spouse or eligible children, and directly to them.


      • Who Can Get Survivor's Benefits?

      • Widows and widowers age 60 or older.

      • Widows and widowers at any age if caring fot the deceased's children who are under age 16.

      • Divorced wives and husbands age 60 or older, if married to the deceased 10 years or more.

      • Widows, widowers, divorced wives and divorced husbands age 50 or older, if they are disabled.

      • Children up to age 18.

      • Children age 18-19, if they attend elementary school or high school full time.
      • Children over age 18, if they became disabled before age 22.

      • The deceased worker's parents age 62 or older, if they were being supported by the worker.


      If the person dies in the middle of the month, Social Security does not pro-rate the number a days a person lived in that month so their whole check may have to be returned.

    2. Banks where accounts are held.


    3. Any companies where investments are held.


    4. All Insurance Companies, Retirement Plans and Fraternal Benefit Programs.


    5. Title companies for property .
      * Be aware that when you go to sell property you will need a copy of the death certificate.


    6. Dept. of Motor Vehicles to change titles of vehicles.


    7. You will need a certified copy of the death certificate to file with the income taxes for the year of death if applicable.


    8. Attorney if Probate is necessary.


    9. Change the beneficiary on any insurance, benefit programs, investments and bank accounts.


    10. A copy of the person's will may need to be filed with the Superior Court.
